The Dottie Crafter by Lynsey Lloyd
I’m an experienced Art and Textiles teacher who has taught at Beaumont Secondary School in St Albans for the past 15 years. I have an Honours Degree in Art Textiles from Nottingham Trent University and have been teaching the subject I love ever since. I’m currently teaching two days a week and am passionate about inspiring people of all ages to be creative.
The Dottie Studio
I recently set up the Dottie Crafter Studio in the garden of my home in Wheathampstead. This space gives me the flexibility to do what I love, while working from home around busy family life. A dream come true!
Over the years I’ve been asked whether I know of any art and sewing classes or whether I run my own – and now I can! The Studio is a creative, warm and colourful space to relax, unwind and be creative. I’ve been running an adult evening art textiles class from Beaumont School for over 10 years and many great friendships have been formed. I’m looking forward to re-creating this supportive environment in the Dottie Studio.
The Studio can seat 8 people around a central craft table and has 5 dedicated sewing stations against the back wall. This creative space is available for hire – so please get in touch!
What we do at the Dottie Studio
The Dottie Studio is a working classroom where anyone can come to be imaginative and escape from everyday stresses. As Picasso said “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up”. Art is not just about being able to draw.
My holiday and weekend classes provide a space for young people to relax and develop new skills. I also offer bespoke workshops that can contribute towards activities such as the Artsmark and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. I have experience in tutoring both art and art textiles at GCSE and A Level and can offer one-to-one or group tutoring.
I’m passionate about inspiring children to be creative. Working with textiles also helps to develop a wide range of skills including; fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination as well as building social skills, self-confidence and mindfulness.
My adult classes encourage the development of artistic ideas through the creative use of colour and texture. No experience is necessary – it is all about having fun, playing with fabric and making new friends. In addition, there is always a pot of tea brewing and custard creams a-plenty
“Lynsey is an inspirational and gifted teacher. She inspires us to experiment and develop our skills and ideas using fabrics and other materials. With Lynsey’s encouragement and teaching I have gained confidence and love my two hours on a Wednesday evening.” JH
“I am doing my bronze Duke of Edinburgh award and I chose to do art textiles with Lynsey as my ‘skill’. Lynsey has been really helpful and supportive during this process, giving me lots of inspiration for pieces during her workshops and when I’m practising on my own at home” EM (aged 14)
“The textiles course is a oasis in my busy and demanding life. I love the creativity it brings out in me.” MJ
